Making transportation systems sustainable is a topic that has attracted the attention of many researchers and urban planners. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Smart Cities Network (ASCN) was initiated to develop a sustainable transportation system in each of the ASEAN countries. A comprehensive understanding of street networks (SNs) can contribute significantly to the achievement of this initiative. This paper, written by CKS Senior Fellow Dr. Yen Yat, measures and compares characteristics of drivable street networks (DSNs) and walkable street networks (WSNs) within the twenty-six ASCN pilot cities by applying multiple network metrics. The OSMnx tool is used to download and analyze WSNs and DSNs from the OpenStreetMap. The findings present topological and geometric characteristics of WSNs and DSNs that are diverse and characterized by several different factors. The cities with orthogonal street grids, high street density, intersection density, and fewer cul-de-sacs display good accessibility as far as reaching destinations is concerned. In contrast, other cities with more curvilinear and circuitous SNs (with many missing links to other streets) are prone to traffic disruption. This study highlights those important features of SNs that have significant implications for the future design of transportation systems in the ASCN – with the ultimate goal of making cities smarter and more livable for ASEAN citizens.
